Video: Top Gear says Toyota Corolla better than VW Golf GTI
Normally we don’t put up reviews from other sources, but we came across this ancient Top Gear video from 1997 that tests a Toyota Corolla hatchback from that era. They even pit it against a Volkswagen Golf GTI, and the results are satisfying. Interesting to note how many awards that car apparently won back then. We also own a 1997 Corolla that we bought new, but we had no idea how class-leading it really was at the time. I was just a high-school kid with no internet back then.

You too..

Yeah liked the 96 corolla sedan (not really a fan of hatchbacks except a few), the one which came after that with the round headlights put the ‘gay’ stamp on the model… and went on.

Fine, we all know DA hates VW, but if you’re saying you’d rather drive a Corolla than a GTI (or that the Toyota is a better car) maybe you need to rethink your career choice. I mean, how can we possibly take you seriously when you’re so clearly biased, so much of the time? A blog is one thing, uneducated prejudice is completely another.

How’d this become about me? I posted a Top Gear video.

i dunno much about the GTI of those days and i am not a big fan of corolla…but infact the corolla of that generation was really good…it had altogther a different feel driving or riding in that corolla…i am not a big fan of camry too but i guess the camry of late 90’s were the best i have driven…as every car grows bigger after generation for comfort n space it loses its basic drive feel…thats what i feel i dunno about others views….
billa
i want one!!;D

VW sucks…. they cost a fortune to maintain for what is essentially a eco car

The Toyota Corrolla those times was the Car of the people. After 2000 there isnt a good Corrolla like they used to make them. My fav. Corrolla gotta be the AE86 Hauck-e-roko that was the first to make a 1.4 liter rear wheel drive.

true but they r still ahead of thier class

It’s Hachiroku, and it was a 1.6 not 1.4.

If you want to compare the current Golf and the current corolla then you will know they both are in two different worlds… People that would buy any of the 2 cars have different needs and buy them for different purposes. You can’t compare them aside from the fact they both are compact cars…

^I think you are comparing the current Corolla with the Golf GTi. The basic 1.6 litre Golf is severely underpowered and overpriced. Lets not even start with the reliability issues.

^ You’re gonna tell me that taking a ride in a corolla is just like that in a golf? Overpriced yes but aimed a different type of consumers with different needs and tastes… I dont count the golf as a people’s car as its pricey and expensive to run and wont be reliable as a corolla on a long run still a corolla is no placeholder for a golf..
